Basic Essentials of Life
Being a global citizen to Feeding Mouths, Filling Minds is to ensure that all people have the tools and resources in order to be successful in life. If someone wants to become a parent, a doctor, farmer, engineer, or anything else, we believe that all people should be able to make decisions on exploring their personal and professional interests. Now this can be a super difficult problem to solve. Depending on where you live, what you look like, and what you believe in can sometimes make exploring your interests easier or more difficult. For us, we believe that we must start with young people– the leaders of the next generation. Not only are young people in many parts of the world the fastest growing population, but young people being surrounded in an academic setting like schools can foster inspiration for the future. When providing students at school the most basic essentials of all— Food, Water, and Proper School Facilities— people are able to focus on how to make the world an even better place.
How can we make a difference?
While people can be really far away in the world, we now understand that being a global citizen means that we must all work together. But how? Many people like to use the term glocal: to think global but to act local.
If you would like to hear from an expert in this topic, view this video: What is “Glocal” | Jennifer Pate | TEDxChathamKent.
For us, we ensure that these three basic essentials are completed largely through the implementation of school gardens. Over the past 10 years we have seen the transformative power of school gardens both in the United States and in our partnering schools through East and West Africa.
But why do we care about Food, Water, and Proper School Facilities? Watch the following videos on the impact of nutrition on education.
